The Park’s Advantages & Facilities

Advantages

  • The University of Texas Research Park is adjacent to the Texas Medical Center (TMC).
  • The TMC, with more than five million patient-visits annually, has one of the highest densities of clinical facilities, basic science and translational research of any location in the world.
  • Forty-two non-profit institutions annually invest more than $1 billion in biomedical research.
  • The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is the USA’s top-ranked cancer hospital and has almost 1,000 faculty. It is the number one recipient of research grants from the National Cancer Institute. Sophisticated, innovative clinical trials bring science to the bedside rapidly and effectively, and some 12,000 among its more than 60,000 patients are enrolled in research protocols each year.
  • The University of Texas Health Sciences Center ranks in the top 10% for NIH awards and has a full array of medical and biological graduate schools. It collaborates productively with the Texas Heart Institute, a leading cardiovascular research and treatment center.
  • UTHSC’s Institute for Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases conducts basic research to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms and thereby create more effective treatments and new strategies for prevention.
  • TexGen, a collaboration among UTHSC, Baylor College of Medicine and M. D. Anderson, is annually collecting DNA samples from 50,000 cardiovascular and cancer patients to identify genes and gene products critically involved in these diseases.
  • M. D. Anderson faculty members publish nearly twice as many juried research findings each year as their nearest competitor.
  • On the TMC campus alone, there are a half-million square feet of facilities for laboratory animals whose current population exceeds 100,000 (90% mice). There is an extensive genetic engineering program for the custom design of research animals.
  • The UT Research Park has 60 acres of land for immediate and affordable development.

The Facilities

UT Research Park has 60 acres of land available for immediate and affordable development. Already open or under construction on the campus are:
  • M. D. Anderson’s R.E. “Bob” Smith Research Building focused on cancer biology, metastasis and pediatrics.
  • A recently opened M. D. Anderson building for immunology and hematological malignancies, and a facility under way for molecular therapeutics, gastrointestinal oncology and molecular pathology.
  • A $125 million Proton Therapy Center, a public-private partnership under construction, brings the most advanced radiation technology in the world to the park. Opened in 2006, it exemplifies the type of academic and commercial collaborations envisioned for the park. Participants include M. D. Anderson, Hitachi and General Electric. Investors include the Houston Police and Fire Departments’ Retirement Funds.
Organizations involved in UT Research Park will work with companies to accommodate their space and facility needs under a variety of arrangements. Small and start-up companies can lease space with full access to common and support facilities such as cold rooms, freezers, X-ray processing, and laboratory washing and sterilization equipment. Standard laboratory modules will vary depending on the occupants’ needs.

Laboratories will be equipped with benches, wet labs, storage and full data/telecommunication and Internet connections. Private offices will be available with modular furnishings. Leases can be structured to accommodate each company’s requirements.

Companies and research institutions located in UT Research Park also may enjoy access to:
  • Common building reception
  • 24-hour access with carded security system
  • Multiple conference and training facilities
  • Dining facilities
  • Conference rooms and loading docks
  • Central mail and express package facilities
  • Access to University of Texas and Texas Medical Center facilities and resources
